Positive/Negative Effects Television have on Children

Hypertext Essay

Television’s today have been the most used home product in all over the world.
Children get engaged to what is being seen on television.  If a child watches too much
television their mind may get hooked to it, which is not a good thing.
A child may become less active in what they use to do compare to what they are doing now
because of what is seen on television.  Spending less time with family or friends can
become a factor because of television viewing.

The positive effects that television can have on a child are preschoolers can learn colors,
alphabets, and even numbers from watching certain TV shows.  They can do this by either
watching Sesame Street where they can learn their colors or numbers or to watching
Barney where they could learn their alphabets.   This shows positive effects on kids' behavior;
programs with positive role models that can influence children to make positive lifestyle
discussions.  For instance, by watching The Magic School Bus, children can get a glimpse
of how our world exists and how they should keep it clean.  Watching television for about 2
to 4 hours a day is what children should be watching.  Learning reading comprehension by
watching the right shows on television is what young viewers should pertain to.  For a child
who speaks Spanish and wants to learn English a good television show they should watch
is Imagine Island.  This show will help a child obtain more vocabulary because of what is
projected in this television show.  “Moderate TV viewing—one to ten hours a week—was
positively associated with achievement.”  Parents need to have positive rules for their
child on what they should be watching.  Watching a show or movie with your child is
important so your child can see that family is essential.

The negative effects that television could have on a child are, too much television
can slow down the mental development of a child.  Television viewing lacks a child to
develop any opportunities for imagination which is important.  "The first 2 years of life are
considered a critical time for brain development. TV and other electronic media can get in
the way of exploring, playing, and interacting with parents and others, which encourages
learning and healthy physical and social development."  Children who watch television for
more than 4 hours a day can turn out to be overweight.  Children need to have some kind of
workout, especially in the summer they should be doing sports or reading.  Children need
to have physical activity so their body can respond correctly to what they eat or even how their
behavior is controlled.  By a child watching television for awhile children tend to lack physical
activity.  Television addictions are becoming more popular now on children on the ways they
are watching television.  All the violence that is portrayed in television shows such as,
Pokémon or even Scooby-Doo these two shows children tend to mimic the negative behavior
shown.  Certain advertisements that children see on television can also get a child to start
eating unhealthy.  For instance, they see ice cream they will get their parents to buy it for
them.  Young girls if they see a clothing advertisement they want it automatically, that just
involves them to get something that is not necessary.  If a young girl for say at the age of
12 sees a commercial with a skinny model they may feel insecure about themselves and
that might cause negative effects to occur.  This is how anorexia is because when a young
girl thinks they are fat and start vomiting their food.  “Cable television satellite technology and
optical fibres are making more and more choices available, and this can become
overwhelming to both the television viewer as well as the surfer on the web.”  By this
technology is getting to much for certain people.  Television shows are just become
inappropriate for young viewers to be looking at.  Television globalization has become a
recognized threat to cultural diversity for children today.  It can separate a young child away
from family if they are not taught the correct way.  Television can be connected to the internet
because young children are viewing shows on the interest today.  “TV can promote risky
behavior, such as trying dangerous stunts, substance use and abuse, and irresponsible
sexual behavior.” YouTube for instance is where young children are watching videos they
should not be watching.  Negative effects for children tend to compare how much television
a child is watching vs. how much school achievement is getting completed.  More than 11
hours a week of television watching can bring down a child’s achievement.  “Violent threats
shown on TV can cause school-aged kids (8-12) to feel fright and worry. When the threat
is shown as news it creates stronger fears than when it is shown as fictional.”  Many threats
are being done by either a middle school child threatening a child they think is a nerd
because of what they are mimicking from TV shows.  Children need to watch what they are
viewing on television because if can cause a downfall to occur in their future.

Principle of Design (Part 2)

Rhythm is taking a look at some things that help make a media presentation flow.  By looking at only one page, will not help your media flow because you need to move in a certain sequence in order to do so.  Uniting something together has a certain grid that flows page to page by keeping fonts and color schemes the same which makes the content of a magazine.  All different sizes of letters is done on this magazine.  The use of color, white space, balance and rhythm hold the page together.  There's a focal point on each page, sub head can help pages flow together through sense of movement.  Horizontal and vertical layouts is what helps the eye see things.  This certain picture shows perspective the one with the African American lady on it.  When using multiple images on  a page you get a perspective of how things are being placed.  Perspective is created through arrangement of objects.  Relationship between different objects is what is important.  The important thing is what is in front of you.  The flow and movement of a picture on a page is what helps the page stay effective.

Principle of Design (Part 1)

You do not want to have so much details on one page because there will be no focal point, balance, or unity.  No one can understand it, it will look to cramped. Focal point is the first principle of design, The large bottle to the left side of the design was the only picture that was big, all others were to small for a reader to understand.  Focal point is the main thing a person  must focus on.  You want your audience to be able to understand how your design is set up and how much contrast is added.  Balance is included in the focal point.  Visiual media can be effected.  Once your focal point is identified other things need to stand out.  Contrasting the size, shape, or color of an image can be effective way to show focal point.

What Is Rhetoric ( March 27)

Rhetoric is the undue use of exaggeration or display, it is the study of effective use of language.  A reading we have done in this course that can compare with Rhetoric perspective is how users read on the web.  Reading involves developing language in a broader way.  Finding sub-headings that match your topic is very important because that helps build upon more ideas in your writing process.  By taking the definition of Rhetorical Perspective it is "a way of looking through, a way of seeing."  Analyzing items that are highlighted usually mean those pieces are the most important in any type of reading you read.

Web 2.0 The Machine is Us/ing Us

Digitial Rhetoric is a new form of communication composed, created, and distributed throught new technologies.  This may lead to a rethinking of one of Wesch's points or some kind of aspect of composing.  Digital text is different and flexible then ordinary paper and pen.  Digitial communication you can add words easier by just hitting the delete button and it looks more organized also.  When you write and make a mistake you would need to either cross out the word or use white out which still isnt as neat as typing.  Adding HTML's for websites is used during digital rhetoric.

Developing a Wikipedia Research Policy

This student is writting a letter about the student use of Wikipedia.  In this letter he addresses ideas on how people use Wikipedia in the wrong ways.  For instance he mentions Wikipedia articles that have no awareness on what topic they are actually citing or taking notes on.  He also mentions that appropriate uses of Wikipedia.  Many people are talking about the research that is found on Wikipedia and how it has helped them with school assignments.  This letter is pretty much saying that Wikipedia is not a legit site to post on a Work Cited page for a paper. Wikipedia has special limitations because it is an open enecyclopedia that is not used as documentation.

Why do people write for Wikipedia?

Certain people like to write for Wikipedia just to get their thoughts through about a certain topic they may either like or want to know more about.  Wikipedia is for the public to share their thoughts with one another.  It is like an "open enecyclopedia" where people revise others work.  Wikipedia does not credit these people for their work though because revision is made on several so it can not be a published site.  None of these articles found on Wikipedia are signed so they can not be published.

Creative Commons 101 by Solon (2011)

The Creative Commons is a movement that was started by standford law professor who encourged people to offer their creative works.  This movement was protected by copyright law and it allowed peoples work to stay private which is important.  If you want to share your stuff with the public you should really find another work to do that on. Why get a lawyer to make your stuff public? That takes a lot of work. Privacy is the most important thing now and days. The license I would like to distribute would be Attribution (CC BY) because people can extend on our work and it could cause money to occur by making me become famous one day.  This is also the most flexible license which I belive is important.

Introduction to Media Literacy

I've changed my major several times since I started college now I'm finally settled with it being Special Ed.  Learning about media and literacy is interesting.  Prior to this reading I wasn't exactly sure what it really meant media, but after reading it, it gave me a better understanding of what it really is.  Building apps is definately interesting and just adding effects to them can also be interesting and creative.

Techno-Literacy Narrative Paper

Writing is “the activity or occupation of composing text for publication.”  Being a writer takes work and dedication.  Growing up one difficulty I struggled with was learning how to write my name. Practice and Practice it took me until I finally starting adapting to the technique of getting the letters written across the page.  My parents and teachers always helped me out, which I do appreciate to this day and they helped me overcome the challenges I had while adapting to new school things.  Motivation is really important, by having someone push you to do things you need in life is always a major plus.  Some parents do not care about what their child is learning so their child decides on slacking and that is how a child stays back or becomes irritated with what they are doing.  Parents need to motivate their children in doing the right things by wanting to learn in school, because without school no child will succeed in his/her future.  Reading books such as, “The Cat in the Hat” always made me smile because it was my favorite book as a child.

Reading while growing up, one of my favorite books I read in high school was “A Walk to Remember”, this book inspired me as a reader.  It helped me build on how much a person should be thankful for what they have and how much love a guy had for his girlfriend.  He never gave up on her which is the main thing.  Reading is very important because it helps the mind think better, and learn new words that they never knew before.  Identifying things will also start becoming easier the more you read.

As the 21st century culture the main social networks sites that people are using mainly are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr.  These social networks help friends communicate with one another and help a person see what is going on in the world today.  Twitter is good with connecting with actors/actresses you may like, you can also Tweet to them and see what is going on with them.  Our 21st century has expanded because back in the days technology was limited, such as no cell phones, computers were rare and also sociability was not as much as it is today through text messaging.  Facebook is one of the main social networks today.  After Myspace became dull everyone switched to Facebook.  People are having problems on social networks by drama is occurring because people have people they shouldn’t be having on their page.  If you do not like someone, then just don’t add them and drama will not be spread.  Believe me I dealt with this back in the day which was not fun.

My teachers in high school, English teachers, help my writing improve.  Writing was a challenge at first, but by getting help it helped me see writing in a different perspective.  English classes here at Kean University, since English is my minor classes have helped me become more of a creative writer, or at least I try.  There are all different kinds of writing that people do.  When I am reading an interesting book, the people and the vision I picture from what I am reading is usually interesting.  I am more of a visual learner I like to picture what I am reading in my mind so that the story becomes clear if I have to do a paper on it.  Being a visual reader is important to me because this is what makes reading more motivating.

Why Participatory Culture is Not Web 2.0 by Jenkins (2010)

I do play games when I go to my cousins house.  My cousin he is more experienced with games then I am. Social learning is just being intereactive with people which I am and this helps build conversations with people you just met. Many people doing online chats or even with games online they communicate.  People learn together by associating themselves with people all over the world. Participants culture is connected to the diverse skills and actions toward shared interests of individuals. Norms and values emerge within the community.

Virtual Writing and Identity by Shaffer (2010)

After reading the first reading by Shaffer is like a dream.  Everything he sees as nothing like when I dream.  I wake up I feel like its real but its all in the head.  This reading also talks about technology which keeps improving.  Online websites I am apart of not really any type of community. I am part of Kiva which is a website where it helps connect people through lending to alloviate poverty because there is a lot going on in our world.
Where the children are taking part in an argumentive essay. I have done that before have written several papers that deal with arguments. Joining online forums you have to be interested in.  Businesses all do different things.

Friends, Friendsters and Myspace Top 8

Friendster was something related to Myspace where you add the friends you want to talk to
Some people add people they may know, but do not really communicate much with that person. "I will argue that Friendship helps people write community into being in social network site." (boyd danah 2006).
Friendster and Myspace have grown in 2003-2006 that was when it was popular for participants around the world.  Myspace was popular at one time, but then Facebook came into play and swepted Myspace away. To this day Facebook is popular followed by Twitter.

A Friend is a relationship that involves some degree of mutual love or admiration.  A friendship more based on emotional and practical support. "Friends and acquantances are quite blurry. All social networks rquire you to craft a profile. One of myspace early strategies was to provide a place for everyone who was rejected from friendster or who didnt want to be on a dating site.

Promp Exercise

Techno-Literacy Narrative
Warm Up Prompts

When i first started reading books from what I remember it was a bit of a challenge at first, I always enjoyed when my parents read me a book when I was going to sleep.  One of my favorite books when I was a child was "The Cat in the Hat."  I always loved reading it its like I read it so much that the words were so easy to read.  Another book that I enjoyed reading was "Clifford."  These two books were my favorite and being read to was nice when I was a child.  It helped me grow as a reader today.

Learning to write was also a challenge because doing things the first time of course always is.  Learning to write my name was quite difficult at first, since my name is long.  Remembering how big I use to write to this day is now funny.  I look back to some of the work that I have saved since I was a child and to this day I learned a lot.  I really never wrote before starting pre-school.  In preschool it was a challenge learning how to write.  Learning how to color between the lines was a bit rough, but practice makes perfect.

Once I started pre-school was when I started writing my name and learned how to do letters and numbers from 1-10.  Learning this of course was a little rough at first, but practicing writing the numbers while I got older started becoming easier.  I learned reading small words at first such as, Cat, and Hat.  I also learned syllabes which helped me sound out each word I was writing.  "school versus home" was different because in school I had my teacher read instructions to the class and at home I found it easier to concentrate.  Home was where I felt I learned more because my parents always helped me write my name out and it got to be a habit after awhile which is great.

I believe at the age of 8 was when I got my first screen name.  I was so excited because I got to chat with my friends and family and learning how to do this was a little rough of course at first but then it started becoming easier.  I remember going into chatrooms when I was around the age of 11.  I talked to all different people in them, which now I would not do this because talking to random people can get a person in trouble.  At the time of course I was so happy because talking to new people was nice and just using ASL I felt like I learned a lot of new information from random strangers.  To this day now my favorite websites I use are Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  On these websites at least I know who I'm talking to now like when I was young in chatrooms.

To this day text messaging I feel like my writing can be interuppted a bit from this because when I text message words are not spelled correctly using abbreviations is popular.  I do enjoy reading text messages which is included in reading because I am actually reading something.  To this day now I am reading more than I use to.  My favorite book I have read while in high school was "A Walk to Remember."  I loved reading this book it touched me in every way possible.

Some activities that I did while growing up in elementary school that involved reading and writing with family and friends were group chats.  I would go in group chats with my friends and writing to each other was one way of communicating.  Another activity was in middle school online instant messaging was popular.  My friends and I would always chat with each other about what was happening and even gossiping was popular back then.  In high school and even to this day now text messaging is the main technology that is being used.  This is how I communicate with my friends not as when I was in middle school I used the phone more for communicating.  If I need to find something out I text message someone then I  would meet up with them If they needed something.

The way reading and writing is used to keep in touch with friends is either by emailing or text messaging.  Reading text messages is now popular in my life today.  Writing emails to my friends is also something I do.  Now people are using twitter to update what they are doing or where they are going to be.  Keeping in touch through Facebook is also popular today.  I leave my friends messages on there if they are not answering their text messages sometimes.  Techonolgy is getting better and better everyday pretty soon everything will be touch and talk.  Some things that I've learned from my friends is that never to give up on anything.  They have helped me stay strong. A skill that I have learned from a friend is I've watched my friend do card tricks which I thought was quite amazing.  It was intersting watching it be performed.  This doesn't really involve reading and writing.

Reading and Writing is used in school and at work by in school reading directions is important and writing is important mainly in english classes when writing papers.  Also in math class, when solving a problem reading every direction to each problem is important, especially when solving word problems.  At work reading different codes is important and memorizing them is also important.  Working at Shop Rite for almost 6 years now I got use to the atmosphere around me and I am waiting to get my career job so I could leave.  Writing down main facts from what you read is important so you do not need to go back to the whole story and re-read it again.

Some experiences I've had with writing and reading on the Internet is reading emails.  Emails were more important back in the day, do not do as much today.  Reading certain websites that are important when doing research for a paper or project is important.  When I am doing research projects and need to cite sources I need to get information on the Interent in order to get it done.  Scholarly journals are important when researching a topic given in an english class.

I've had some articles I had to read for one of my english classes.  Reading them was quite interesting it was about plagarism.  I learned more about plagarism then I had known before.  Learning about this topic I thought was interesting because plagarism needs to be stopped and people are doing more and more everyday. This has shaped my identity as a writer by me watching what I write and make sure if I take something from a website that I use the right quoting method.  Everything needs to be quoted if taken from another person.

Reflecting to Find a Focus

Most of my answers that I have responded to each of the questions do have things in common.  It talks about how my writing was while I was growing up.  Each experience shaped my idenity as a writer by my writing has grown since I was younger.  Learning new words while gettin older is important and learning how to add interesting facts within my writing has become important.  These experience helped me grow as a writer today.  Proofreading my work is important so that I make sure what I wrote makes sense when turning in an assignment.

The only long pattern that I see that began in my childhood is me learning how to read and write.  Some people are not taught as well as others about writing and reading.  Learning to know how to read is important because going for job interviews is important if you are being asked questions you need to know how to respond back.  Learning new vocabulary is important because it helps you build as a person.  An experience I see from my childhood that sets up my current relationship with reading and writing are comparing and contrasting the things that I've learned.  One similarity is sounding out each word even to this day I like to see how many syllabes a word has so pronucing it can be easier.  A difference from my childhood as to now is I've taken a big step in life with spelling and grammar.  Learning new grammar skills has become important and learning new words is also important because when writing its important to have new words then repeating the same ones over and over just becomes boring.  Using your personality is important having an open mind to everything.

What I thought about writing at first while growing up that it can be difficult.  For instance, learning new grammar has become difficult like where to add commas and apostaphes.  This was quite the "shift" because writing was simple in my mind until the topic comes up and then thinking about it can be difficult depending on what it is.  For instance, I had to write a paper in my British Lit. class which was difficult.  Writing about that time things were taking place was boring and I had to really think about my writing.Chancing my writing is important because knowing what I am going to write can sometimes be a challenge.  Once I chance my writing things start to become easier because at least I have some sort of idea what I am going to write.  Writing in my future I am hoping gets even better I want to find ways on improving my writing.  I want to be a Special Ed teacher so writing needs to be taken serious in order to do this.  I love children and this is something I always wanted to do all through my life.

Some parts to my relationship with writing that are the result to my "formative experiences" are the way I am is the way I write.  Whatever may come to my mind I like to jot down things so I enjoy free writing because ideas that come to mind I like to remember so writing them down on paper is something important to me.  For instance, I keep reminders on my phone so I know what I need to get done because without them I would totally forget about half of the things I need to get finished for school and even in general.  My relationship to writing that connects to my "nature" is just learning new techniques about writing and what I need to get done in order to complete what i need to.

I feel that writing can be fun depending on the topic that is either chosen or asked to write about.  Writing about topics such as "the revolution" or "WWI" I believe is boring so writing would be looked as a turn off.  Writing about my life for instance, would be interesting because its about myself so I know this topic really well.  Writing about an interesting topic is always fun so I definately enjoy doing that. My expereinces in my life that I've gone through connect with my feelings about writing.  My feelings undermine my identity as a writer by the way I am feeling a particular day all involves how good or bad my writing will be.  If I am happy one day I will end up writing a lot.  If I am sad or just not feeling right my ideas will slowly come to my mind and I will just lose interest in writing.  It all depends on the kind of day I am having that involves my writing.  I want to expand on my writing.  I want it to be better and more interesting, because when I write I feel like I do not put much enthuisam in my writing which really needs to start changing.

The way I use writing/technology has changed by technology is getting so much more in depth that text messaging is so much easier then actually writing out things.  Technology is getting better and better each day that probably by next year students will have devices that do their work for them.  Who knows technology is getting better each day.  "Turning Points" to me is something that totally twists the way someone writes for example, if someone is writing about their life a turning point could be like something that happened in their life that made them who they are today.  A turning point could also be the ending of someones writing.  Something that changed could also be a turning point.  Turning Points could also be adventourous depending on what type of mood is happening in someones life.

Thinking about a personal, family, educational, or work experience that has drove my relationship to writing is important.  My family has been there since I was born so they helped me grow on my wiritng.  My parents would always encourge me to stay strong and never give up when it comes to school.  Educational wise my writing has grown since being in college.  While I was in Middlesex County College I felt like  I didn't work as hard as I am now in Kean.  My writing experience was looked upon as not to good.  Wanting to graduate college now my writing has overall become better.

Blog #1- Study of Web 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0

After reading these two different articles about the study of the web 1.0, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 there were many different things about all 3. Web 3.0 is the newest verison that is yet to still come out and it is said to be the best thing around.  This means it will help people communicate without them actualy writting it is said to be the evolution of web usuage, transforming web into a database.  Web 2.0 is said to have been around since Oct 2004.  Web 1.0 a small number of writers created web pages for large number of readers.  A few examples of Web 2.0 that people today are using which may be even better with Web 3.0 is flickr, youtube, blogs, wikipedia and Orkut.

A few comparisons between Web 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 is web 1.0 is the read only web which includes 250,000 sites and web 2.0 is the read write web it includes 1,000,000 global users and web 3.0 is the pervasive web with billions of datacells trillions of users will be using it because of how great it will be.

My opinions about Web 3.0 is that children may not get a well educated education because everything will be done for them.  Technology today is already increasing and many children are lacking due to all the technology they are using with text messagining for instance.  When web 3.0 is created businesses may start losing money due to how easy children will be learning just by using the web and everything being given to them.

Blog #2 - How Users Read on the Web by Nielsen

Nielsen's description of how others read the web is based on people scanning the page.  People usually end up picking out certain words or sentences they find interesting or important.  Only 16% of 100 people actually read word for word.  If it is said to print the article out that is when  a person usually will do it, but if it is online and not stated reading text online is easier I feel.  Highlightning important information could be important if you need to go back and look for important key ideas you highlighted.  Reading online I feel is similiar to print on paper.  The one thing that is different tho, is certain people feel reading online is easier because the text may be larger and could be increased as on paper it may be harder for them to see.
